Stuart Newton became an Assistant Auditor General with the Office of the Auditor General of British Columbia November 28, 2016. Prior to this, Stuart was the Comptroller General for the Province of British Columbia from November 2010 to November 2016. He is a Chartered Accountant, as well as a Certified Internal Auditor with over 27 years of internal and external audit, consulting, and policy experience.

Most of Stuart's career in government has been with the Office of the Comptroller General. Prior to being the Comptroller General, he held a number of positions at the office. He served as Executive Director, Internal Audit and Advisory Service, responsible for the development and execution of the annual audit plan and ensuring quality assurance with respect to audit and advisory services. He also served as Executive Director, Financial Management Branch; responsible for the effective stewardship and management of financial resources by providing strategic direction and expertise with regard to the development, implementation and evolution of the legislative, policy and procedural framework.
